About the Project
Increasing Accessibility of Science Communication in Archaeology (BaWikA)
A Project by the Department of Archaeology and Cultural History of Northeast Africa:
Material Culture at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin
The online exhibition “Pi-Ramesse: Discover the Capital of Ramesses II” was officially inaugurated in July 2023. Since then, it has been inviting visitors of all ages to virtually explore the impressive capital of one of the most important kings of Pharaonic Egypt. Almost all content is available in three languages ‒ German, English and Arabic.
Now, as part of the BaWikA project, the exhibition has been further enhanced in a way that enables diverse groups of people with diverse needs to participate equally in the content. The barrier-free design was made possible through cooperation between the departments of Rehabilitation Technology & New Media as well as the department of Archaeology and Cultural History of Northeast Africa at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and through the generous financial support of the Berliner Antike-Kolleg. The project was part of the program for the 2022/23 annual theme “Active Voices. Transdisciplinarity and Participation in Ancient Studies”.
